Teaching artist Laura Grace Weldon will guide participants in the art of fiction writing. This eight-week program is especially for adults 55 and over, beginners welcome. In this class you will stretch and strengthen your fiction writing skills through creative activities, collaborative writing exercises, and sharing your work (on a voluntary basis). We'll also go over some fiction writing basics and generate fresh ideas to inspire your writing. And yes, there's homework! Requirements: Participants should bring writing supplies to each session (digital or pen and paper). At the end of the series, participants will have the opportunity to showcase their work at a public reception. While the course is free, students must be able to commit to the full 8 week course and culminating event to participate. Classes will cover the following topics: Session 1: Introduction, power of fiction, collaborative storytelling, six-word fiction. Session 2: Story's impact on the body, first page, fiction from art, three-sentence fiction. Session 3: Story arc, story shapes, worst/best storytelling, postcard fiction. Session 4: Characters, backstory, reworking story styles. Session 5: Scenes, descriptions, image darkroom, objects tell a story. Session 6: Dialogue practice, flash fiction. Session 7: Editing, universality of stories. Session 8: Establishing writing practices, culminating event preparation. Teaching artist statement: Although we have too few opportunities in today's busy world, we are a storytelling species. The more we open ourselves to creating stories, the more story ideas occur to us. It's a delight to work with people as they tap into the very human gift of imagination.
