The Boy in the Black Suit

by Jason Reynolds

After losing his mom to cancer and practically losing his dad to depression and alcoholism, Matt learns to rely on his neighbor Mr. Ray. Burdened by his own losses, Mr. Ray provides Matt not only with a job at the funeral home (which explains the black suit that he now wears all the time), but with the support and guidance that a 17-year-old boy needs when forced to grow up so suddenly. Jason Reynolds handles this serious subject with realistic characters and some wonderful laugh-out-loud moments.
