DITTRICK MUSEUM OF MEDICAL HISTORY

Allen Memorial Medical Library Building, 11000 Euclid Avenue, Cleveland, Ohio 44106, (216) 368-3648. Website
Mon. - Fri.: 10 a.m. - 4 p.m.;  Sat., Sun., and holidays closed.  Admission: free.

One of the largest collections in the United States documenting medical history from a local perspective with emphasis on Cleveland and the Western Reserve from the early days of settlement to the mid-20th century. Exhibits feature the history of medical education in the area, instruments used by area physicians, and the emergence of technology in medical practice. Includes the complete furnishings of two period doctors' offices (1880 & 1930) and an 1880 pharmacy.
The museum grew from the late 19th century efforts of Dudley Peter Allen, M.D., a founder of the Cleveland Medical Library Association, to preserve the medical heritage of northeastern Ohio by preserving the equipment of its physicians. The idea carried on and expanded by Howard Dittrick, M.D., who was first involved with the collection about 1925. Dittrick was named Curator of the museum in 1928 and later Director. In 1943, the museum was named in his honor.

DUNHAM TAVERN MUSEUM

Admission:  adults, $3.00, children, $2.00, 3 and under are free.  Group tours by reservation.
Dunham Tavern Museum, built in 1824, is the oldest building still standing on its original site in the City of Cleveland.  The home and tavern was also a stagecoach stop on the old Buffalo-Cleveland-Detroit post road.  Inside are many fascinating items of early America.  The “keeping room” was the family’s two-room abode until the remainder of the house was completed.  A formal parlor is furnished in the style of Western Reserve settlers from New England.  The original Taproom and “ladies’ parlor” preserve the atmosphere of a meeting place of the mid-19th Century.  A family bedroom, a stagecoach drivers’ sleeping room and a library are furnished with appropriate 19th Century Ohio antiques.  Display areas help visitors understand the home’s early and later history.
Other attractions on the grounds include The Dunham Barn, built in 2000 in the footprint of a barn and stable which formerly stood on the property, and an 1840’s log building which was moved to the site in 1998.  Cleveland Botanical Garden’s Learning Garden Program is headquartered in the 1860’s-era Banks-Baldwin House, also moved in 1998, on the corner of Chester and East 66th Street.
