Jennet Stearne’s father is a witchfinder. He hangs witches for a living. When the family immigrates to Massachusetts they arrive during the Salem witch trials. Jennet, who loves science, finds her self in world and time where scientific rationalism is pitted against tradition, prejudice, and fear as society moves into a new era. Jennet is a wonderful, fully human character and this is historical fiction at its best.

As a seven year old Henry Day is kidnapped by changelings, hobgoblin like creatures. One of them takes on Henry’s life, transforming him to look like Henry. The "real" Henry lives with the ragged band of creatures and is told to forget his past. Each boy struggles with feelings of alienation and haunted memories from their past. The world of the changlings is vivid and believable in detail, and the changeling Henry’s life in the "real" world is always shadowed by his knowledge of what he is even as he grows up and has a son of his own.
