CCPL announces plans for phased reopening

CCPL announces plans for phased reopening

Release date: 5/14/2020

In phase two of the plan, drive-up window and curbside service will begin June 1

Parma, OH – May 14, 2020 – Cuyahoga County Public Library (CCPL) Executive Director Tracy Strobel laid out plans for a phased reopening at a virtual meeting of the CCPL Policy, Planning and External Relations Committee broadcast live on Facebook on Tuesday, May 12, 2020 (see attachment).

On March 13, all CCPL branches were closed to the public as a precaution against COVID-19. Book drops were closed and customers were asked to keep any materials they had out on loan and not attempt to return them. CCPL also announced it would waive fines and fees for all materials borrowed prior to the closure.

During the first phase of the reopening plan, the Library enhanced its collection of digital resources (e.g. eBooks, audiobooks), began offering virtual programs, and launched an Ask Us Online service to provide virtual reference and email support for customers with questions about their library account or accessing eBooks and other digital resources from home.

In the second phase of the plan, 13 CCPL branches will open for either drive-through window or curbside service only Monday through Saturday from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM beginning June 1. These 11 branches will offer drive-through window service:

Curbside service will be offered at the Fairview Park and Solon branches.

CCPL staff will begin calling customers who have placed items on hold starting June 1 to provide information about where they can pick up items they placed on hold while the Library were closed. Library customers should not attempt to pick up items until they have been contacted.

Customers may begin returning materials on June 1. CCPL will waive fines and fees on all returned materials. Returns will be accepted via library book drops only. Items can be returned at any of CCPL's 27 branches. All returned materials will be quarantined for 72 hours as a safety precaution.

Prior to June 1, all CCPL staff members returning to work to provide drive-through and curbside service, or to process returned materials and holds, will be trained on COVID-19 safety protocols. Staff will be issued PPE and be required to check their temperature prior to working to support a safe environment.

"We are eager to begin offering drive-through and curbside services," said Strobel. "Our leadership team has taken great care to ensure we can execute this plan safely for both our staff and customers. Their health, safety and peace of mind are of the utmost importance. As we look ahead to executing the next phases in this plan we will continue to do so thoughtfully and with public health as our top priority."

Phase three of the plan includes limited public access to CCPL branches. Phase 4 would restore full access to CCPL. No dates have been set for phases 3 or 4, and transitioning to these phases will be dependent upon guidelines and restrictions from state and local officials.
