Dermatillomania AKA How My Anxiety Shows Up AKA What My Mother Passed Down to Me

By Stephanie Ginese

I chase light each day
more so flame
seduced by that which occupies
& consumes
I spend too many minutes weighing the future                                    its ghosts

which saint do I pray to when the need to feast
on fleeting moments
becomes the devouring of skin

I hope to reincarnate as something
that does not have teeth

Tripper the Travel Van!

travel time begins
a successful launch
all packed, food prep’d
looking out the window
Did you see all the snow?
It matters NOT. Lets go!

The circle of depression
Self-depricating behavior
The ablility to sink or swim
The chance at failure or success
To be strong or weak
To search for independence
To be held in prison for co-dependence
The family that no longer speaks
There is no mentors, friends, or escapes
Passed down through the generations
Unbroken
Perhaps the circle should be re-named cycle

POEM DAY 23: Write a poem in a geometric shape such as a diamond, a triangle, or a rhombus.

Remembering Moldova in a Wind-storm
“Menke Triangles”—a “Menke Sonnet”

Wind sleeps
Less and less…
Answer this: why
dream a town has no
shadow, or imagine
Russian syntax forever
reshaping our letters, flags or
empty chairs; never again useful?
Next, abandoned homes, smoke-houses; grey air…
…our homes, our feet with something wet to stand near;
child-hood poetry books, filleted like fat Blue-gill.
Find our lost letters; symbols eaten as crisp apples.
Pretend there’s enough words to feed, confuse or influence
foreigners and stray kittens. Be like winter, no breath divides;

nothing connects, not letters, towns or brave pages we have kissed.
Less and less I hear wind storms. I see roads, missing pieces,
too many laughing soldiers; Mama among the corn;
Papa near the river; gulag inside scrub pines;
no one writing; nothing taught, remembered…
except hungry kittens licking our food,
a lost woman; khaki uniforms,
skies, clouds made into picture books;
stories dreamed; songs forgotten;
Papa, Mama packing…
…trains dropping into
the horizon
less and less
wind sleeps.

This is art harnessing in its images and their urgency what bedevils us and what redeems us. It is a powerful piece, Stephanie. And I learned a new word and the world it limns as well. Thank you.
